Professor Gray is the Director of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation (ISI ), and co-ordinates a multi-disciplinary research program across the university.
The ISI has a strong focus on water based research, with research programs in water treatment, water resource management, ecology, social and behavioural aspects of water use and water related ICT. Similar programs are being developed for the energy and food sectors.
Professor Gray currently leads the CSIRO Cluster on Advanced Membrane Technologies for Water Treatment, is an associate editor for the Water Research journal and co-convenor of the Australian Water Association (AWA) Special Interest Network on Membranes and Desalination. Previously he was team leader of the CSIRO Urban Water team, a member of the International Water Association's Australia committee and a member of the editorial board of the AWA Water Journal.
Professor Gray's research interests include water treatment, membrane fouling, high recovery desalination processes, membrane fabrication, membrane distillation, high strength flocculation and integrated water management. He has an applied research focus, and was a member of the team that developed the MIEX resin that is sold by Orica.
